Thoroughly enjoyed it. The movie is not really what it seems from the previews. I won’t give away the plot or anything so don’t worry about spoilers. It’s not what you expect in the fact that there is quite a bit more language that originally let on and it’s a bit rough. The movie is incredible with its visual effects, nothing groundbreaking or new, but that doesn’t seem like what the film is trying to do. It utilizes the technology of today in an extremely good way.
Now just because there is language, that doesn’t make it bad, on the contrary, the language actually helps add to the creation of Hancock’s character. It was just kind of shocking when you hear it at first. Not really recommended it to the younger crowds under 8. That’s just me though, I’m not your kid’s parent, you are. The language is used in a way that makes you laugh at the placement and timing of it, and basically because Will Smith can deliver it perfectly.
Smith delivers an amazing performance for a role that he hasn’t really done. I’m thinking back and I don’t really think superhero has been in his credentials. Hancock is a super powered being who is struggling to remember who he is and where he comes from. Through all this he makes you laugh, gasp, laugh some more, cry and in the case of my Dad, stomp your feet and belly laugh. His role will blow you away.
Jason Bateman plays a struggling PR guy with no one to represent, and he delivers extremely well. He is married to Charlize Theron in the film and she has some deeper roles in the plot which are confusing, but not all together complicating. Both roles are delivered well with subtleties that are there if you catch them.
The film doesn’t get complicated which is really good. Some parts keep you guessing but that’s about it. they made a simple movie that entertains. They didn’t get into any kind of deeper political issues or plots within plots within plots. It works and I think this one is definitely a must see, maybe twice. 4.5 out of 5 on the awesomeness scale.
